Pastor's Message
Greetings, Advent People!

I used to say that “Hallmark” and the outside world doesn’t know what to do with the season of Advent, since Christmas goods are in the stores before the end of September, and one Milwaukee radio station plays Christmas songs starting Nov. 1; and both the stores and the airwaves jettison Christmas come Dec. 26! But no more! Advent Calendars are the latest craze! (And another way to make $$!) Except that now most of them have nothing to do with waiting on Jesus, and everything to do with waiting on Santa!

Still, we are "Advent People" because Advent helps us ponder "Who we are waiting for?" "What kind of Savior do we/the world need?" And, "What do we do while we wait?" Much of the world will be done with Christmas (and Advent calendars) by Dec. 25. But we’re still getting started!

So, we welcome Advent, as a time of anticipation and a time for preparation. We prepare our hearts! How cluttered up are they, either with devotion to things that can't save us? Or with heartbreak? Or just with hardness and coldness? Do we let the Spirit open them? Warm them? Would we allow God to put new hearts within us? Like God promised in the time of Jeremiah?

In Advent, we prepare our minds as well! The idea that God would come to us and dwell with us is mind-blowing! The possibilities for real peace and for real joy and for really Good News for all people are not easy for us to imagine!

In Advent, we also pray and listen so we can figure out what to do while we wait! We don't sit on our hands waiting for God to wave some magic wand and straighten out everything that's wrong. We look for people who we can partner with in seeking to know God's will. We pay attention to people who are lonely, hungry, grieving, lost, or hurting. We offer what we can of ourselves, and our time, and our possessions.

And then we rejoice! We give thanks for the baby in the manger, and for the family around the table. We celebrate the grown-up Jesus who still challenges us, and still calls us to follow, and still promises to be with us! And we sing! We let our spirits sing. We let our voices sing! We join with the heavenly chorus, because God comes to us again...the God who saves!

Blessings in Advent-wherever your heart, or mind, or life happens to be, right now. God comes to be with us! -Pastor Paul

JOB 31-JOB RESTS HIS CASE. JOB 38-GOD ANSWERS! Bible Background: Job makes his final plea for justice in chapters 29–31 and then ‘rests his case’. In 32–37, a new person, Elihu, speaks. His speech may be a later addition to the book to ‘soften’ some of

Genesis 1=The First Story of Creation Bible Background: The 1st story of the Bible is fittingly, the 1st creation story! Genesis 2 offers another account, which is quite different! That tells us the writers/editors of Genesis weren’t trying to solve all the mysteries of creation, and left

1 Corinthians 12 = The Body of Christ Bible Background: Paul’s letters to the church at Corinth have lovely words and harsh words. The Christians there were gifted and challenged at the same time: divided when they could have been united; cocky when they could have been humble; selfish

MARK 6 REJECTION + SENDING + DEATH OF JOHN Bible Background: In Mark, Jesus’ popular appeal hits a roadblock. People in his home town can’t believe he’s a prophet. They can’t grasp the change and challenge and opportunity Jesus brings. Mark (who is usually brief on
